Pharmaceutical uses of L-Glutathione
Glutathione is a tripeptide consisting of the amino acids glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, which is commercially available in two forms: reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG). In its reduced form it is a powerful antioxidant, which in nature protects cells in the body from damage caused by oxidative stress and free radicals. GSH can also potentially be used in a number of pharmaceutical and surgical uses. However, there are also some unauthorised uses of L-glutathione which have an effect on the overall market. The objective was to investigate the supply chain for glutathione and also the regulations surrounding its use.
Method
CPL researched the pharmaceutical uses of glutathione in the US and Canada identifying the manufacturers of glutathione-based pharmaceuticals. This included registered drugs, orphan drugs, medical devices and excipients but excluded dietary supplements which were not registered as drugs. The report included an investigation of the markets for L-glutathione and regulations governing its use.
