In this case study, a toll manufacturing company engaged CPL Business Consultants to assist with developing a diversification strategy for its supercritical CO2 (scCO2) extraction services.

Objective

The objective of this study was to help a client build its business by quantifying the potential market for supercritical CO2 extraction services and, insofar as possible, identify potential customers and specific markets for these services.  The aim was to formulate a diversification strategy for supercritical CO2 extraction services to minimise the risk of dependency on a limited number of core products.

Method

During the course of the study, ~50 contacts were made with scCO2 companies (tollers, equipment manufacturers and those with captive customers), distributors, and potential users of scCO2 technologies in Europe, the US, India and Australia/New Zealand.

The main contents of the study were based on a large number of other sources, including in-house databases, government regulators, trade journals, patent databases, scientific journals and existing reports on market sectors in which scCO2 could be utilised.

CPL carried out an extensive search of scientific publications, patents, trade news, regulatory databases and clinical trials databases. The data collected were used to assess and analyse the issues above in sufficient depth to allow strategic conclusions to be drawn.
