The alginates industry is mature, tracing back to the 1930s – but has evolved continuously over time. Prior to the 1960s and 1970s, the producers of seaweed hydrocolloids were privately owned enterprises. The industry has consolidated mainly through horizontal but also vertical consolidation and is now dominated by a few large players.  CPL has supported companies both with their organic growth and M&A activities in alginate and also in hydrocolloids more widely.

Objective

The objective of this study was to provide insights on global markets and applications for alginates, particularly of non-technical grades.

Method

This study was based on sources available to CPL including in-house databases, an extensive network of contacts and other publicly available information such as that obtained from patents and technical literature. CPL was able to produce the report within a compressed time-scale to meet the client’s needs.

The product scope was alginates, with a focus on sodium alginate, potassium alginate, and calcium alginate including High G and High M alginates. The geographic scope was global with regional breakdown for Europe, Asia, North America, Latin America, Middle East and Africa. Applications of interest included food, beverage and pharmaceuticals (including medical devices).
