In this case study, a multinational manufacturing and consumer goods company engaged CPL Business Consultants to look at the market potential for sucrose esters as ingredients in food and cosmetics.  CPL’s report and strategic recommendations enabled the client to make an informed decision on investing in in-house production versus increasing external sourcing of these ingredients.

Sucrose esters (‘sucrose fatty acid esters’ or ‘sugar esters’) are non-ionic surfactants consisting of sucrose as a hydrophilic group and fatty acid as a lipophilic group. They are tasteless, odourless and nontoxic, so they are good emulsifiers for foods. They are a non-irritant to the eyes and skin and are therefore suitable for use in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Their excellent biodegradability also means they do not cause environmental pollution.

Given these favourable properties, the objective of this study was to determine the market potential of sucrose esters in the food and cosmetics industry.

The study sought to:

  • Determine the price and type for the dominant sucrose esters.
  • Estimate demand by region in Japan, EU, USA and the rest of the world.
  • Estimate demand by end-use application for food, cosmetics and other uses.
  • Describe the production sites, capacity, capacity utilisation and costs by the producer.
