In this case study, CPL Business Consultants was involved in PUReOPE,  an EU-co-funded project to capture value by polyphenol recovery from process waste in brewing and related industries.

PUReOPE (Process for Upgrade and Recovery Of Polyphenol Extracts) was a unique and innovative methodology with a number of benefits. FDT, a specialist engineering consultancy, was a project partner. The process recovered and extracted high-value polyphenol compounds from process waste in brewing, distilling, malting and cereals production. Firstly, this provided an environmental benefit by reducing effluent volumes and treatment requirements. Secondly, PUReOPE also provided an economic benefit by recovering the water and caustic soda for re-use. Finally, there were uses for the recovered polyphenols in various industries, including healthcare, food ingredients and food processing.

FDT coordinated the project and project partners in the UK, Denmark and Italy tested the PUReOPE polyphenol recovery module and assessed the extracted polyphenols. Additionally, CPL Business Consultants helped to identify the potential applications, product formats, routes to market and customers for PUReOPE polyphenols. The Eco-Innovation Initiative of the European Union co-funded the PUReOPE project.  For more information on this project, please visit the European Commission Eco-innovation website. You can also click here for a brochure and here for a summary of opportunities for polyphenol ingredients.
