Objective

The objective of this project was to assist our client in identifying potential partners and then facilitating one or more suitable partnerships for the development of its products suitable for use where they have value, especially in human food and dietary supplements although opportunities will also be sought in cosmetics, pet food and animal feed.

The study provided specific recommendations to the client as to how to enter these markets most efficiently, cost-effectively and quickly.

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) have a well-documented history as a prebiotic product and is in use already for this purpose as an alternative to oligofructans mainly from chicory. FOS has a number of technical characteristics that may make it preferred as a prebiotic and the current premium price is based on these characteristics. The report covers aspects of prebiotics markets including trends, main players and products.

Method

The study was carried out by obtaining information from within the CPL database, from public sources and from contacts with the manufacturers and users of fructo-oligosaccharides (and inulin). In addition, CPL obtained information from knowledgeable individuals and companies. The information was collated and analysed.
