Dr Guy Poppy is an interdisciplinary scientist focused on Global Food systems.

Dr Guy Poppy is an interdisciplinary scientist focused on Global Food systems. He is the Associate Vice-President for Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Southampton.  Guy has led a strategy group at Southampton to address Grand Challenges ranging from sustainability to ageing and the future of work. He has published more than 100 papers and more than 10,000 citations.

Professor Poppy spent six years as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government’s Food Standards Agency. He is a world expert on Risk Analysis and Risk Communication, especially in food, the environment and public health.

Also, he previously worked at Rothamsted Research for 10 years.  He undertook pioneering work on the environmental risks of GM crops.  This led to a lifelong interest in working at the Science/Policy interface. 

Guy joined CPL Business Consultants in 2021.  Throughout his career, he has worked with SMEs and large multinationals and is a trusted and sought-after consultant. 

Dr Guy Poppy has a BSc in biology from Imperial College and a DPhil in Chemical Ecology from the University of Oxford. Additionally, he holds honorary professorships from Oregon State University and Imperial College. 

Professor Poppy is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He is an expert advisor on gene editing for The Royal Society and a UK scientific expert on EU Cost programmes. Notably, the Queen awarded him the Companion of the Order of Bath in her 2022 birthday honours.
