H0303 Business Model and Flavour/Colour Markets for a Gene Discovery Technology

Have a look at our PowerPoint Introduction and Brochure describing deliverables, differentiators and case studies. Eight case studies can also be reviewed.

Objective

This was the second part of two projects performed for our client, a plant biotechnology company. The objective of the first investigation was to assist the client in utilising gene discovery technologies and capabilities in the development of commercially relevant research collaborations with industry players in the food, feed, cosmetics and/or pharmaceutical industries.

The objective of extension of this work was threefold: –

  1. To continue to make progress with existing partners and, if possible, attempt to generate interest amongst new contacts in carotenoids and flavour ingredients.
  2. To examine the validity of a business model in which the client would forward integrate to demonstrate their technology.
  3. To more closely examine ingredients, markets and potential partners in areas in which the client had made most progress e.g. nutraceuticals based on terpenoids.

Having successfully identified a number of potential partners it became clear that the client would have to develop a successful business model and business plan in order to go forward more rapidly and more successfully. In addition to contract work with partners the client would endeavour to position themselves better – perhaps as a biotechnology company who would forward integrate to demonstrate actual ingredients. CPL were to test the premise of this model by asking companies they had previously contacted whether such a model would be more attractive from their point of view. In addition, CPL decided to attempt to devise a theoretical model for biotechnology company strategies.
